Benefits of Metal Wall Cladding

Metal sheeting installed as wall cladding offers a range of beneficial properties over traditional timber alternatives. The hard-wearing properties of 0.5mm thick steel cladding make this an ideal, high-quality cladding material.

The contemporary appeal and long-lasting properties of our cladding sheets makes them suitable for all types of environmental conditions, including strong winds, heavy rain and snow.

Our sheets have different profiles, so you can achieve the look and feel you desire for wall cladding applications. The depth varies, from corrugated sheets to the two box profile roofing sheets.

Cladding Sheet Profiles

We manufacture 30/500 standing seam sheets, 32/1000 box profile sheets, 13/3 corrugated and 34/1000 box profile sheets, along with flashings to complete your design.

30/500 standing seam sheets are available with ribs (right diagram) to reduce ‘drumming’ noise in high winds, or without ribs (left diagram)for a flat aesthetic. Seams measure 30mm high with an installed width coverage of 500mm.

Standing Seam profile diagram

32/1000 box profile features a shallow profile at just 32mm high, keeping the distance from the wall to the external edge of the sheet to a minimum.

32/1000 Box Profile Sheets

34/1000 box profile has a higher, more prominent profile in comparison, making for a real statement when installed on exterior walls as side cladding.

32/1000 Box Profile Sheets

Corrugated profile comprises 13 round corrugations with each measuring 76.2mm from peak to peak. The width coverage of this steel cladding option is 990mm when lapped.

Sheet Finishes And Coatings

Profiles are available in GreenCoat® Pural BT, PVC Plastisol, Polyester Paint and Galvanised steel coatings, each providing different benefits.

GreenCoat® Pural BT coated steel sheets provide excellent weather, UV and scratch resistance, with a long life of up to 50 years.

PVC Plastisol provides a high resistance to scratching and weathering due to a tough, leather grain surface manufactured from 0.5mm galvanised sheets for steel cladding.

Polyester paint coated steel cladding is a more cost-effective solution for wall cladding sheets, offering a wider choice of colours when compared to 0.5mm PVC.

Plain galvanised steel gives high weather resistance, without colour applied for a metallic finish.

Sheet Thickness

We supply 0.5mm and 0.7mm thick roof sheets for side cladding structures that require exterior wall cladding. This is a recommended thickness for wall cladding sheets.

The thickness of metal cladding sheets for Corrugated and Box Profile, unlike for other roofing sheets, is provided as 0.5mm thickness, making the sheeting lighter without comprising quality across the profile depth.

As a cladding material, side wall sheeting does not require as much resistance from downward pressures when compared to roofing.

Cost

Compared to other wall cladding products, such as timber or composite, our wall cladding sheets constructed from galvanised steel will be cheaper in the long run compared to many other types, due to reduced long-term costs of maintenance and upkeep throughout its lifespan.

Other benefits of steel cladding include being lightweight and manufactured from 0.5mm thick galvanised steel, which reduces costs per square metre.

How To Maintain Metal Wall Cladding

With little in the way of maintenance, steel wall cladding sheets require very little in the way of upkeep. Unlike roof sheets, wall cladding sheets are easy to clean due to their vertical position on the side of a building.

Maintenance is only required as and when to keep the coating clear of debris and remove the build up of dirt. This can be performed with a pressure washer or cleaned by hand with soapy water.

Sheet Orientation

Unlike roof installations, which are installed in a way to allow for effective water run-off down the slope of a roof, for metal cladding installations this can be either horizontal or vertical. This gives you flexibility when it comes to making your project look the way you want it to. With the range of profiles and colours available that we supply, there is plenty of choice available.

How To Install Your Metal Cladding Sheets

Install metal cladding sheets onto external walls using a series of battens positioned adjacent to the direction of the profiled sheeting.

Installing sheets with the profile running vertically will allow for maximum water run-off and reduce the build-up of debris.

Choosing the right type of fixings will depend on the profile and battens being used. For example, we recommend 65mm screws with BAZ washers for fixing corrugated roofing sheets to timber battens.

It is recommended to position battens no more than 1 metre apart, to provide adequate support across the width of the panel to reduce bending and warping of the sheet.

We can provide the necessary fixings and accessories for your cladding project, along with finishing touches around your building with the help of corner barge flashings. Or, why not create custom-made flashings for bespoke accessories?

Durable Coatings

As a cladding sheet material, steel has long been used and has the added benefit of being recyclable. To produce our pre-coated sheets, a system of multi-layer coatings is applied to the zinc-coated high tensile steel strip and then oven-cured to ensure optimum adhesion. This gives metal wall cladding with excellent corrosion resistance and climatic protection together with abrasion resistance and a strong structure.

FAQs

What are the disadvantages of metal wall cladding?

In extreme weather conditions, wall cladding sheets made of metal can get very cold in the winter months and hot to the touch in the summer months. Panels cannot be painted, and due to their rigid build quality, working around elaborate designs can be restricting.

Steel sheeting can also be difficult to handle, usually making for a two-person installation. Details of installation can be found in our dedicated help & advice section.

Why use Metal Cladding?

Our wall cladding sheets are selected for their low-maintenance, hard-wearing properties, providing a solid, modern exterior cladding design for garden buildings, industrial units, agricultural buildings and more.

The samples look very good quality and the brochure shows useful examples of the roofing on different buildings. I haven’t ordered roofing yet as not ready.
